The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the Regional Studies Center (RSC) are pleased to invite you to attend a special seminar, entitled “One Hundred Days of the Sarkisian Government,” on Wednesday, 26 June 2013 from 15:00-18:00, in the Marriott Hotel’s Sis Hall. The event will include presentations by several leading analysts and experts focusing on the performance of the Armenian government 100 days since taking office (see event agenda attached).

More specifically, this event will provide an objective assessment and analysis of the first hundred days of the Sarkisian second presidential term as well as a discussion of the main political, economic and foreign policy challenges facing the Armenian government.

The event will be in English and Armenian, with simultaneous translation provided.

RSC Calls for Greater EU Engagement in Nagorno-Karabakh

On June 17, 2013, the Regional Studies Center (RCS) participated in a special discussion focused on the issue of European Union engagement in the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.  RSC Director Richard Giragosian was invited to give a presentation at the European Policy Centre (EPC), a leading think tank in Brussels, and was joined by Zaur Shiriyev, from the Centre for Strategic Studies in Baku.  The speakers offered an Armenian and Azerbaijani perspective on the issue, with each speaker briefly outlining his view on EU engagement, based on two separate policy papers that each speaker prepared for the EPC (see attached).

In cooperation with the Embassy of France in Armenia, the Regional Studies Center (RSC) invites you to a special presentation by Dr. Claire Mouradian on Wednesday, 12 June at 14:00, to be held in the Golden Tulip Hotel’s Vivaldi Room. Dr. Mouradian will present an analysis of the historical Russian colonial view of the Caucasus from the Tsarist through the Soviet periods.

Please note that the presentation will be in French, with translation into Armenian only.

Dr. Mouradian is a prominent French historian specializing in the history and geopolitics of the Caucasus, and is the Research Director at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and teaches at L'École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS).

As an independent “think tank,” the Regional Studies Center (RSC) offers a regular series of similar events and briefings, aimed at providing an alternative source of objective analysis and information covering a wide range of issues.

CHALLENGES TO TURKISH FOREIGN POLICY:
THE CASES OF THE SOUTH CAUCASUS AND SYRIA

In cooperation with the Embassy of France in Armenia, the Regional Studies Center (RSC) invites you to a special presentation and discussion focusing on Turkish foreign policy on Wednesday, 8 May at 14:30, to be held in the Golden Tulip Hotel’s Vivaldi Room.

The special presentation will offer a unique assessment of Turkish foreign policy, with a specific focus on challenges to Turkish engagement in the South Caucasus and from the ongoing war in Syria. Although the presentation will be in English, there will be translation provided.

The director of the Regional Studies Center (RSC), Richard Giragosian, will open the event with a brief general analysis of Turkish foreign policy, followed by a presentation by Dr. Bayram Balci, a visiting scholar at the Middle East Program at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where his research focuses on Turkey and Turkish foreign policy in the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.

Regional Security Trends

On Thursday, 7 March, the latest session of the RSC Expert School featured a special presentation and discussion of “Regional Security Trends,” with a focus on the military/security situation in the broader South Caucasus in general, and on Nagorno Karabagh, in particular. The attached presentation concentrated on five main topics: (1) an overview of “Regional Insecurity in the South Caucasus; (2) Deeper Trends & Deadlier Risks; (3) The Broader Significance of Mounting Tension and Insecurity; (4) an analysis of the “Shifting Balance of Power” in the region; and (5) a set of Six Recommendations to de-escalate tension and contain threats.
