As an independent “think tank,” the Regional Studies Center (RSC) offers a regular monthly series of “Closed Briefings” with RSC Director Richard Giragosian providing a concise analytical presentation of the most significant political, economic and military/security developments in Armenia and the broader region over the previous month.
This month’s briefing offered a sweeping analysis covering four distinct thematic areas: domestic political developments, including the “court crisis” and the planned 5 April constitutional referendum; recent economic developments, assessing positive growth and reform; issues related to foreign policy, including public health & foreign policy in terms of managing the coronavirus crisis, the pursuit of a more sophisticated strategy in Armenia-EU relations, managing relations with Iran, and developments in the Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) peace process; as well as issues related to defense and security, with an assessment of a recent surge in non-combat deaths in the armed forces.
For the February briefing, the Brazilian, Lithuanian, and Swiss Ambassadors attended, along with representatives from the European Union Delegation to Armenia and the EUSR, as well as the Embassies of Australia (based in Moscow), France, Georgia, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. Participants from various international organizations, including the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) also joined the discussion, together with local experts and students.
The attached are the Analytical Notes from the February briefing that was held on 26 February 2020.
