ASSESSING DEVELOPMENTS IN ARMENIA & WIDER REGION

ASSESSING DEVELOPMENTS IN ARMENIA & WIDER REGION

14-16 August 2024

In the latest in our regular series of monthly analytical briefings, the Regional Studies Center (RSC) convened a briefing on 14 August to assess recent developments in Armenia and the wider South Caucasus region.  The briefing offered an assessment of recent developments in Armenia and the South Caucasus region, with a specific focus on the state of current Armenian-Azerbaijani diplomatic negotiations, the outlook for Armenia-Turkey “normalization,” and a wider focus on the policy of “diversification” of Armenian Foreign policy.  The briefing by RSC Director Richard Giragosian also reviewed recent developments in domestic politics in the country, including the recent end of opposition protests and the fallacy of Azerbaijan’s demand to amend the Armenian constitution.

This briefing was attended by the Brazilian and Serbian Ambassadors to Armenia, along with diplomatic staff from the Embassies of Czechia, Denmark, France, Italy, Lithuania, Romania, Serbia, Spain, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Union Delegation to Armenia, officials from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and several prominent local Armenian experts and analysts.

As with other monthly briefings, the briefing also featured prominent visiting guests, including former UK Ambassador to Armenia Charles Lonsdale and a group from the University Network for Human Rights (UNHR), led by Tamar Hayrikyan, the Director of Programs, and Emily Wilder, UNHR Researcher & Editor, with several of their student members.

In addition to the in-person briefing in Yerevan on 14 August, the RSC also offered two alternative online sessions, on 15 and 16 August, with participants from Washington, London, Brussels, Berlin and Tbilisi.

As an independent “think tank,” the Regional Studies Center (RSC) offers this regular series of analytical briefings to present a concise and comprehensive assessment of the most significant political, economic and military/security developments in Armenia and the South Caucasus region.  With a target audience of representatives of the diplomatic community and international organizations in Armenia, the format of this briefing series consists of an informal “off-the-record” and closed discussion, reflecting our aim of providing an alternative source of objective analysis.
