As a regular series of activities, the Regional Studies Center (RSC) convened its latest Focus Group on 27 May, with a discussion focused on “Armenia’s New Post-War Strategy” that included an interactive review of the aftermath from the Armenian defeat in the 2020 war with Azerbaijan and the subsequent loss of Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) in 2023.
The discussion also centered on the Armenian struggle to adjust to a difficult new post-war reality of the weakness and vulnerability of Armenia. The Focus Group also explored the Armenian government’s pursuit of a diplomatic strategy based on the necessity for compromise and concession, while also initiating a strategic reorientation seeking to “diversify” the country’s security partners. This interactive discussion then assessed Armenia’s position with a forward-looking analysis of future scenarios.
Facilitated by RSC Director Richard Giragosian, the anonymous findings of this Focus Group were shared with Armenian officials and for the specific benefit of Clingendael- the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, an independent international affairs think tank and academy, and in cooperation with Marina Ohanjanyan, a visiting Senior Research Fellow at Clingendael’s Security Unit, who attended the Focus Group.
