RSC DIRECTOR PARTICIPATES IN SOUTH CAUCASUS SECURITY FORUM

RSC Director Richard Giragosian participated in the 2nd South Caucasus Security Forum 2014, from 18-19 November in Tbilisi, Georgia. Entitled “New regional Security Environment and Global Challenges,” the conference was organized by the Center for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENNA) and the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (GFSIS).

Participating in the a session entitled, “Post-Vilnius development of Eastern Partnership and the future perspectives of security sector in EaP countries,” RSC Director Giragosian offered a perspective of the view from Armenia. Moderated by Barbora Padrtová, the Programme Director for Transition at CENAA, the panel also included presentations by Nodar Kharshiladze, Senior Fellow at GFSIS and former First Deputy Georgian Defense Minister, and Kamal Makili-Aliyev, Research Fellow at the Baku-based Center for Strategic Studies (SAM).

Keynote speeches were delivered by David Jalaghania, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Tomas Valasek, Ambassador, Permanent representative of the Slovak Republic to NATO, General Vladimer Chachibaia, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, General Pavel Macko, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces, and Ivlian Haindrava, Deputy Secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia, Karla Wursterova, director of the Visegrad Fund and Robert Ondrejcak, Director of CENAA.

Other panelists included high level government officials representing the Visegrád Countries: Peter Burian, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Petr Drulák, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, and István Mikola, State Secretary for Security Policy and International Cooperation of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary.

The forum included up to 30 speakers and moderators from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine, US, China, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

CENAA is an independent NGO based in Slovakia focusing mainly on research, training, conferences and seminars on international relations, foreign and security policy. Established in 1998, the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (GFSIS) is an independent, non-profit policy think tank dedicated to helping improve public policy decision-making in Georgia through research and analysis, training of policymakers and policy analysts, and public education. GFSIS activities are aimed at promoting democracy and fostering political and economic reforms; enhancing regional cooperation; creating a friendly and secure investment environment; and providing local private sector and the international business community opportunities to participate in the economy of the Caucasus region.
